One day at around 13 years of age I realized I wasn’t like everyone else around me.  I would turn around in circles at the end of the day to balance myself out.  I would have an uncontrollable urge to run back and touch places with my toe that I had just walked past.  I would turn light switches on and off until it felt right – and couldn’t understand why my dad only turned it off and left the room. 

My awareness of how different I was grew by the day.

I wanted to fit in when I was young.  Later I wanted to have peace from very disturbing thoughts.  My OCD changed over the years.

Somehow, in the very beginning, at 14 or 15, I realized I could control my OCD habits.  By 19 years old I realized I could control my thoughts too.

Now, 40 years later I still have OCD.  Only it has been a non-issue to me for most of this time.

I probably wouldn’t even be writing this letter to you if it wasn’t for one thing:

My own son started showing signs of OCD.

One day I saw my son start the familiar toe-tapping… then walking down the steps in our house, and running back up to touch a certain step… the compulsive need for order… the development of obsessive thoughts.

I had never really thought much about what I did right to disconnect OCD’s power over me.  Now I wanted to teach my son exactly how to disconnect the growing power OCD was making in his life.  I would need to show him how I learned to disconnect my OCD.

By the time I got to college, my struggles and triumph’s over OCD led me to study psychology and sociology.  I was at the University of Northern Colorado at the time and simply remember being driven to dive deeper and deeper into what made me, and others with mental conflicts tick.

Psychology was fascinating, but the emphasis on finding and building up research on “problems” didn’t seem right to me.  I felt rather successful in dealing with OCD, so I didn’t see myself as a problem.

I can now look back all those years and tell you that if I had seen myself as sick, or had been told by a medical professional I was sick early on – I may not have been able to figure out how to heal my OCD… on my own.

But I’m jumping ahead… let me go back to college and my son.

So college was a time I again realized I wasn’t normal.  Except this time, it wasn’t because I was cleaning my hands constantly, or late for dates with girls because I was messing with the stove or the locks in my house.

My problem was I thought the experts were approaching things all wrong when it came to treating OCD.

My reflections led me to realize everyday I did a couple special things.  These were habits that installed a sense of control, built me up physically and allowed me to withstand great stress I think compared to others.

In fact, I “regret” to say I led a pretty happy life.  I say regret, because, you, like me, may find it hard to believe anything you read anymore.  In a few minutes, I am going to show you how you too can make OCD a non-issue in your life.
